Role of Skill Development in India : A holistic view

India is the land of the great, we have a history which is extremely complex. In fact, I think we would be having the longest and most detailed history ever. This makes me think, what was there that our forefathers were doing right, which we are not. I am speaking in terms of the current social and economic conditions that are prevailing in the nation.

Why there is so much inequality. I mean when I read the religious texts and Indian history of say billions of years back. There was prosperity, people were not hungry and they had proper jobs to fend for themselves. What the hell went wrong and when did it go wrong.

Well as far as my little reasoning goes. I think it started with foreign invasions. The Mughals, the Dutch and the English. All came to India with one sole purpose, and that was business. And as a good businessman, these people focused on the bottom-line, in turn, destroying the entire socio-economic fiber of the nation. people started learning skills which were not future proof. A stereotype was created, for example being a doctor is seen as superior to being a plumber. This has created a skills gap over the time, and we as a nation are suffering now because of that. they say that 98% of our engineers lack skills. Let me ask this question to everyone is being a software engineer superior to a civil engineer. Is it like making buildings are bad and writing code is not. What happened to our indigenous craftsman. They died a slow death because their skills were not preserved.

Till date, our nation is struggling with not having the right skill sets. Luckily the current government has taken some very bold and strong steps towards upgrading the skill sets of Indian youth. One such initiative is the NEEM Scheme. This scheme provides for OJT in the latest skills that are globally sought after. Now we have some hope that things will improve from there for sure.
